Trump Says US and Mexico Working Toward New Trade Deal in 90 Days, Hints at Growing Rapport with Sheinbaum

NEW DELHI, July 31, 2025 —US President Donald Trump revealed today that the United States and Mexico have entered a 90-day window to finalize a comprehensive bilateral trade deal, extending the current tariff structure while setting the stage for renewed negotiations. The announcement was made in a detailed Truth Social post, where Trump also suggested a deepening personal bond with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“We are getting to know and understand each other,” Trump wrote, praising Sheinbaum’s leadership and productive tone during their recent phone call. The conversation reportedly focused on trade, border cooperation, and security issues.
Trump’s tone marked a shift from the more combative posture he took toward Mexico during his earlier presidency, suggesting an evolving dynamic with Mexico’s first female president. The personal rapport, still in early stages, could be pivotal in reshaping North American trade diplomacy.
Geopolitical analyst Gerogery Brew in a post on X wrote: “Trump’s deeply personal approach to diplomacy is fascinating. The border, immigration, security etc. was the single most animating issue in last year’s election. But compared to Canada, EU and China, it hasn’t translated into bilateral friction.”
Trump in his post detailed key elements of the temporary deal with Mexico which included 90-day extension of the existing agreement; Mexico to continue paying 25% tariff on Fentanyl; 25% tariff on cars; and 50% tariff on steel, aluminum, and copper. It also included “immediate removal of Mexico’s non-tariff trade barriers”, which Trump called many.
Trump also stated that the US and Mexico will continue bilateral discussions to conclude a full trade agreement within the 90-day period or longer if necessary.
The US is now managing parallel 90-day trade deal negotiations with both Mexico and China, suggesting Trump’s push for country-specific, transactional trade diplomacy. The move places Mexico—America’s top trading partner—alongside China in Trump’s evolving trade calculus.
Analysts interpret the dual timelines as a signal to US voters and global markets that Trump 2025 trade policy will emphasize bilateralism, high tariffs, and national interest-first economics.
“Trump is reasserting his style of dealmaking—tariffs first, diplomacy later—but the mention of ‘understanding each other’ with Sheinbaum shows he’s also positioning himself as pragmatic and capable of working with global leaders,” said a Washington-based trade policy expert.
Trump reiterated that discussions would also center on border security, drug trafficking, and illegal immigration, areas where Mexico’s cooperation remains critical. He also mentioned the presence of top US officials in the trade discussion, including VP JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and National Security Advisor Stephen Miller.
The inclusion of high-level security and economic officials signals the multi-dimensional nature of the US–Mexico agenda, said analysts.
