Mending Manipur

Noting that guns and narcotics are bane to stability in several regions across the world, The Asian Age in its Editorial welcomed Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah’s promise to constitute a judicial commission to probe the Manipur violence. Also underlining that solution be found within the existing boundary of Manipur, the daily flagged freed flow of guns and narcotics from Myanmar with the connivance of the security personnel, politicians, officials and others.

The daily also hauled Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh for his incompetence. It also sought action against the High Court judge who lit the ethnic fire in Manipur by “desiring” scheduled tribes status to the majority Meitei tribe within four weeks.

Redrawing of boundaries of states on ethnic lines is indeed no solution, but inability to fix Myanmar supply line of guns and narcotics should worry all as China gains easy access to instigate instability in the bordering states. Also, the politics over reservation is now too toxic to the wellbeing of the people.

Power Politics

The Economic Times in its Editorial has argued that further spread of the culture of free electricity is an impediment to India’s aim in energy transition to become a net zero by 2070. The daily, while mentioning the case of Rajasthan also joining states giving free power, said that such politics is literally being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Quoting Gireesh Pradhan Expert Group, the business daily called for fixing concessional electricity tariff for low-consuming households. It also argued that the mainstreaming of the free power politics incentivizes coal-based electricity production.

In South Delhi, a roadside tyre puncture mechanic sources electricity with the help of a solar panel. This is in Delhi where the perverse politics of subsidizing electricity was conceived, first by late Sheila Dikshit and later perfected by maverick Arvind Kejriwal, the incumbent chief minister of the national capital.

Magical Medicines

The grapevine doing rounds is that the subtext of the wrestlers’ protest against the BJP MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh is about him taking on a powerful Yoga man who sells cures for everything. The Telegraph in its Editorial has lamented that the government has called for a relook at Rule 170, which is against inappropriate advertisements of Ayurveda, unani and siddha.

The Kolkata-based daily quoted the government statistics to 18812 objectionable advertisements were found during 2018-21. While the people hardly know of the rigorous trials of alternative medicines, the daily said that the allopathic has a higher standards of testing.

Alternative medicines have mushroomed, promising magic to even ailments, which have defied the global medical might. Besides, alternative medicines and products suffer from lack of standardization. Also, the inspection regime in the country is such that cough syrups certified by state bodies have allegedly killed several children in some of the countries.
