AYODHYA, September 12, 2025 — Reaffirming the deep cultural and spiritual ties between India and Mauritius, Prime Minister Navin Chandra Ramgoolam on Friday offered prayers at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya. He was accompanied by his wife, Veena Ramgoolam, and a 30-member delegation.

Welcomed with Vedic chants, flower showers, and traditional performances, Ramgoolam became the second foreign head of state, after Bhutan’s Prime Minister, to bow before Ram Lalla. He and his wife performed rituals for public welfare and witnessed ongoing temple construction work.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath received the Mauritian leader at Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, presenting him with a bouquet and a memento in keeping with India’s tradition of Atithi Devo Bhava. “Later at the temple, CM Yogi honoured Ramgoolam with a scale model of the Mandir, while Veena Ramgoolam was felicitated with an angavastra,” said the Chief Minister’s Office in a media statement.

A short film prepared by the Tata Group showcased the grandeur and unique features of the Ram Mandir, explained in detail by officials.

“Speaking on the occasion, CM Yogi described the visit as a symbol of cultural unity, while Dr. Ramgoolam expressed joy at visiting the sacred land of Ayodhya and prayed for stronger bilateral ties,” added the media statement.

With nearly two-thirds of Mauritius’s population of Indian origin, the island nation shares centuries-old bonds with India through devotion to the Ramayana, Lord Ram, and shared traditions.

Security was tight during the high-profile visit, with police, ATS teams, and CCTV surveillance securing the entire route and temple complex.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had hosted his Mauritian counterpart in Varanasi. Both the leaders had held a roadshow in the city, which is also the parliamentarian constituency of Modi. The Prime Minister during his visit to Mauritius earlier this year had presented the waters of Sangam in Prayagraj during the Mahakumbh.
