Marred Marriage
Subtle moves are now being played in full popular scrutiny by political actors for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and The Asian Age opining in its Editorial on turmoil in relations between the BJP and the AIADMK said that the two parties are now locked in a forced marriage by a domineering parent. The daily turned spotlight on K. Annamalai, the former IPS officer and currently the Tamil Nadu BJP chief, as he has gone in an overdrive on corruption plank.
The daily, while commenting on Annamalai’s attack on corruption also bringing late J. Jayalalitha in the line of fire and the consequent eruption of anger in the ranks of the AIADMK, wondered Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s exhortation to the people in the state to give 25 of 39 Lok Sabha seats to the party.
The BJP seeks to ride on corruption plank to gain foothold in Tamil Nadu politics. But the BJP is without local faces to pull the votes, and the current turmoil in relations may suggest hard bargaining in the offing with the AIADMK.
Flying Fares
The airlines fares are literally on fire. But the Economic Times in its Editorial has warned the government not to reintroduce the price cap on air fares.
The daily reasoned that the market forces can take care of the discovery of the right prices. It also wondered if there could be price caps for the air turbine fuel (ATF). The daily also claimed that the air fares, which are said to have gone out of the roof, are only for a select routes.
The fact of the matter is that the air fares have risen exponentially in the recent months amid allegations that the prices are being rigged with software play to exploit the dynamic pricing. Trains are reporting massive waiting lists, and the people who have to travel on a short notices are indeed paying with deep cuts in their wallets.
Writing Deaths
There is no such thing as life without bloodshed, wrote novelist Cormac McCarthy, and The Indian Express in its Editorial has paid rich tribute to the author of ‘No Country For Old Men’, ‘All The Preety Horses’, ‘The Road’, and ‘Blood Meridian’. The daily recalled McCarthy’s words that while death is a major issue in the world, it was odd to be not able to talk about it.
The Noida-based daily stated that McCarthy was a rebel at heart, who dropped out of schools, but devoured books. It noted that the works of McCarthy were not easy to read for excessive blood-letting. McCarthy, 89, died at a time when blood-letting across the world has become a new normal, as the war rages in Ukraine, while civil wars and ethnic clashes kill in hundreds across the continents. Yet, life finds relevance in deaths.
