Manipur Governor Calls off Assembly Session

New Delhi, February 10: Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla has called off the Manipur Assembly session. Incumbent Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had submitted his resignation yesterday to Bhalla.
The Opposition Congress was slated to move a no-confidence motion against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Manipur. But fast-paced political events finally ended the brinkmanship of Singh.
The BJP’s North-east in-charge Sambit Patra had been busy for the past few days with unpublicized political meetings. Sources said that the outcomes of a few meetings called by the Chief Minister changed the political scene in Manipur.
Reports said that Singh had previously also ‘tried’ to resign while he changed his decision after the ‘protest by the women supporters in Manipur’.

But events in Imphal following appointment of Bhalla began wearing out strength of Singh. To test his strength within the BJP legislators in Manipur, the Chief Minister called a few meetings.
“The strength of the attendance began dipping, to turn to trickle in the last few days,” said a Manipur observer. He said that that the Chief Minister associates sought to fight off deepening dissension in the party by countering claims made in media reports on lower attendances in the meetings called by him.
“Situations began changing after the appointment of Bhalla as the Governor of the state. Patra also became quite active in the state,” added the Manipur observer.
He said that there was a buzz in the state capital of a chartered plane taking off with a few BJP legislators to New Delhi. “The BJP legislators got hints that the Central leadership is looking at options other than Singh in the office,” he added.
Singh also found that his support within the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) also began wearing out. “After the appointment of Bhalla, the message finally began settling that the situation in the state with Singh at helm will only worsen with international ramifications,” added the Manipur observer.
Manipur observers have long been stating that peace efforts cannot succeed in the state with Singh as the CM. “The Chief Minister is also now not acceptable to all the members of the Meitei community. This sense has now been understood by New Delhi,” said a senior BJP functionary.
After the eruption of violence between Meitei and Kuki tribes, more than 200 people have reportedly lost lives in the state. Besides, thousands of the people have been displaced who are now living in temporary camps.
