Kolkata, November 19, 2025 — Stepping up attacks on the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral roll, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday alleged that booth level officers are dying by suicides due to “pressure brought upon them by the Election Commission of India (ECI).” Banerjee has stepped up attacks on the ongoing SIR in the aftermath of the Bihar verdict in which the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) swept the Assembly elections with a strike rate of an almost 85 percent.

“Deeply shocked and saddened. Today again, we lost a Booth Level Officer in Mal, Jalpaiguri — Smt Shanti Muni Ekka, a tribal lady, an anganwadi worker who took her own life under the unbearable pressure of the ongoing SIR work,” posted Banerjee on X.

She also claimed that “28 people have already lost their lives since SIR began — some due to fear and uncertainty, others due to stress and overload.” “Such precious lives are being lost because of the unplanned, relentless workload imposed by the so-called Election Commission of India,” added Banerjee.

The ruling Trinamool Congress has also thrown weight behind the agitating Matua community activists over the ongoing west Bengal SIR. A delegation of the TMC leaders this week met the agitating Matua activists in solidarity, while demanding that the West Bengal SIR be stopped.

The ECI is carrying out SIR in multiple states, including those which are heading for Assembly elections next year. West Bengal is also bracing up for the Assembly elections in April next year.

“A process that earlier took three years is now being forced into two months on the eve of elections to please political masters, putting inhuman pressure on BLOs. I urge the ECI to act with conscience and immediately halt this unplanned drive before more lives are lost,” demanded the West Bengal Chief Minister.

The ECI is learnt to have imparted intensive training to BLOs before launching the SIRs in multiple states. In Assam, the ECI has decided to conduct a special revision of the electoral roll. The ECI has not reacted to the claims of the West Bengal Chief Minister.
