TMC claims CM’s intervention stopped alleged SIR-linked voter exclusion, calling it a decisive pushback against BJP’s ‘outsider politics’ in Bengal

New Delhi, February 4, 2026 — West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday argued the case of her government over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in the Supreme Court. Trinamool Congress said that Banerjee fought a “Constitutional battle against exclusion of voters in West Bengal.”

The state minister and TMC leader Shashi Panja in a video statement on Wednesday described the day’s political developments as a “constitutional battle led by Banerjee to protect voter rights in the state.”

Panja said what unfolded in the Supreme Court was not a routine political confrontation but a fight anchored in constitutional principles, with Banerjee raising serious concerns over alleged voter harassment in the name of SIR verification.

“She fought for the voters of Bengal,” Panja said, alleging that people were being harassed and intimidated over fears of exclusion from electoral rolls. According to the Trinamool leader, the anxiety surrounding possible exclusion had led to “unfortunate deaths,” including cases of suicide.

“These deaths and the harassment are completely unwarranted. They should never have happened,” Panja said, asserting that Banerjee took up the issue precisely to prevent such outcomes.

Panja framed the episode as a direct rebuke to the Bharatiya Janata Party, accusing it of engineering a “nefarious conspiracy” to exclude voters under the guise of electoral scrutiny. She alleged that the BJP, which she described as an “outsider force” in Bengal, sought to undermine the democratic process ahead of elections.

Calling the developments “a slap on the face of the BJP,” Panja claimed only the Trinamool Congress had both the constitutional grounding and political will to confront such actions. “This is the battle Didi fought, and everyone saw it,” she said.

The TMC leader reiterated that voter rights would remain non-negotiable under Banerjee’s leadership. “Every voter will be protected. Voter rights will be rescued,” Panja asserted, positioning the chief minister as the principal defender of Bengal’s electorate.

The controversy adds another layer of intensity to Bengal’s already polarised political climate, with voter verification and electoral integrity emerging as flashpoints ahead of crucial political contests.
