BJP-led Mahayuti Cruises for Landslide Victory in Maharashtra Elections

New Delhi, November 23: Maharashtra Assembly may soon be without an official leader of the Opposition. None of the Opposition constituent in the Maharashtra Assembly elections is leading on minimum strength required to get the status of the Opposition party.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti is cruising for a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The BJP is leading on 126 Assembly seats. The BJP allies — the Shiv Sena of Eknath Shinde and NCP of Ajit Pawar – are also leading on 54 and 35 Assembly seats respectively.

The Opposition alliance, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) appears decimated in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray is leading on 20 Assembly seats. The Congress gain is just on 19 Assembly seats. The NCP of Sharad Pawar is leading just on 14 Assembly seats.

The Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray may fail to get the recognition of the official Opposition party in the Maharashtra Assembly. A minimum of 10 per cent of the Assembly strength is the condition for getting the status of the opposition party.

Maharashtra Assembly has a total of 288 Assembly seat. The Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray will need to win at least 29 Assembly seats to get the status of the Opposition party. But the outfit is leading on just 20 Assembly seats.

The Congress also had failed to get the status of the Opposition party in the Lok Sabha after the 2014 and the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress bagged the status of the Opposition party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress won 99 Lok Sabha seats to get the status of an Opposition party. Rahul Gandhi took the role of the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

“This is a stolen mandate. Does it happen like this? There will be no Opposition party in the Maharashtra Assembly,” said Sanjay Rout of the Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray.

Rout also claimed that the incumbent chief minister Eknath Shinde had been making claims that none of his MLAs would lose elections. “Can anyone make such claims unless the polls are manipulated? This is a stolen mandate,” alleged Rout.

The Maharashtra Assembly elections’ verdict is in sharp contrast to the outcome of the Lok Sabha polls. The Congress-led MVA had won 30 of the total 48 Lok Sabha seats to stun the BJP. The RSS had actively canvassed in the Maharashtra Assembly elections.
