Akharas Give Call to Cancel ‘Shahi Snan’ After 2 am Mahakumbh Stampede

New Delhi, January 29: A massive surge of the people at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj on early Wednesday morning set off a stampede. Several people have been injured while reports feared casualty also.
Amar Ujala in a ground report from the Mahakumbh Mela area said that several ambulances carried away the people to hospital. Dainik Bhaskar also in a video report showed the people falling over each other amid heavy rush on ‘Mauni Amawasya’.
Images and videos doing the rounds on the social media platforms suggest that several people have been injured in the stampede. Uttar Pradesh government is yet to issue an official stampede which took place at 2 am.
Local media reports said that the ambulances have taken the injured people for medical care. Images showed the injured people lying on the floor.
“…many people have been injured in the accident while relief and rescue operations are underway. The stampede in the fair area occurred due to the sudden increase in the crowd at Sangam Nose. At present, the injured have been admitted to the hospital in the fair area,” Hindustan reported.
Akanksha Rana, an official at the Mahakumbh, told reporters that “some people have been injured and they have been hospitalised after a barrier broke at the Sangam”. She refused to divulge details on number of injured or any casualty.
Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president Mahant Ravindra Puri told news agency PTI that the ‘Shahi snan’ has been cancelled. “All of our saints and seers were ready for the ‘snan’ when we were informed about this incident. That’s why we have decided to call off our ‘snan’ on ‘Mauni Amavasya’,” he was quoted by the PTI having said.
Several other religious bodies announced the cancellation of the ‘Shahi snan’.
