BJP Holds Edge Against Congress In Direct Contests

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, October 9: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) polled 0.90 per cent more votes than the Congress in Haryana. The BJP with 48 Assembly seats netted 11 more constituencies in the party’s kitty.

The poll outcome in Haryana stunned the Congress. The Haryana verdict floored veteran election watchers. The Congress has officially refused to accept the Haryana poll verdict.

The Congress leader Jairam Ramesh told reporters that the party will be gathering evidences to share with the Election Commission (EC) on the alleged “manipulation of the poll outcome”. From an early celebration, the Congress saw a tsunami of verdict in party favour in early trends soon collapsing to hand over the BJP lead in Haryana.

The BJP proved political pundits wrong with Haryana result. The BJP also stunned own leaders who were giving 60 seats to the Congress in their projections for Haryana.

The BJP’s Haryana verdict is on patterns of wins in Tripura, Goa and Uttarakhand Assembly polls. The BJP ranks faced disunity in all these states. Yet, the BJP won Assembly polls.

Haryana and Jammu Assembly poll verdicts reiterate that the organisation distinguishes the BJP from the Congress. Turncoats can board the BJP even a day before the poll date announcement and win elections after getting the party nomination.

The BJP polled highest ever vote percentage in Jammu and Kashmir at 25 per cent. The BJP has a highest ever seat tally of 29 in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

Facing 10-year of anti-incumbency, the BJP raised the vote share of the party from 36 per cent to 39.94 per cent in Haryana. The BJP’s ability for an inorganic growth may be compared with monopolistic entities who eat out smaller competitors. The BJP almost finished erstwhile partner Jananayak Janata Party (JJ) in Haryana.

The Haryana poll turf from initial crowded show shrunk to a direct fight between the BJP and the Congress. The BJP always has an edge against the Congress in direct contest.

The Congress may have benefited with an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The Arvind Kejriwal-led outfit fielded candidates on 89 out of 90 Assembly seats to nibble away 1.79 per cent vote share.

But the lord of the Congress in Haryana Bhupinder Singh Hooda committed the mistake of not assessing the impact of the AAP in Haryana.
