Liberal Extremism

Trust The Indian Express to come out with intellectual buffoonery in its stretched intellectualism, as the daily in an Editorial has hauled IIT Bombay for dedicating canteen space for vegetarian, calling the decision to have come under the influence of ‘Savarana (upper castes)’, who have hold in the premier technical institution. The Noida-based daily argues that all should eat together in the true spirit of celebrating diversity of culture and culinary habits.

The editor who penned the editorial surely not have known the other backward caste Hindus in the western Uttar Pradesh, who are vegetarian, and those who don’t even visit houses where non-vegetarian food is cooked. The daily even links the issue to India serving vegetarian only meals at state dinner, forgetting that the UAE had all vegetarian menu when Prime minister was the state guest. By stretching the arguments of The Indian Express, the daily would even seek out Muslims to sit on table where pork is consumed.

Ageing Population

Several dailies, including The Tribune and The Hindu, have commented in their respective Editorial on the population report of the United Nations, which spotlighted that India will have one-fifth population above the age of 60 years by 2050. The dailies have reasoned that India’s demographic dividends could be in the last stage of fruition, while the country needs to work on the social security for the ageing population. The dailies have also stressed on the economic vulnerabilities, with ageing population in the rural areas growing.

Chandigarh is known as a city of elderlies now, while also called town of empty nests, for the grown-ups’ live abroad or elsewhere. On the policy front, there is indeed a vacuum to take care of the ageing population, as out of the pocket expenses on health needs are on the rise. At the same time, the loneliness of the elderlies is surely a challenge for the society to address.

Hate Wave

The Telegraph has in its Editorial counted several incidents in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and other places where the Muslims are almost being lynched as part of the growing hate violence against the minority community. The Kolkata-based daily has also highlighted the report of The Washington Times to underline that there is a systematic build up of hate in the country, with the social media platform being used to peddle anti-minority sentiments.

The daily has rightly given vent to angst also in the backdrop of the BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri raining abuses on fellow member Danish Ali, while action has not yet been taken against the South delhi leader.
