NEW DELHI, May 4, 2025 – Pop superstar Lady Gaga transformed Copacabana Beach into a colossal dance floor Saturday night. She set a historic free concert record, drawing an estimated 2.1 million fans.
Lady Gaga, who is a raging pop superstar, surpassed Madonna’s 1.6 million-strong crowd at the same venue last year. The event, part of the city’s ‘Todo Mundo no Rio’ initiative to boost the local economy, was a vibrant celebration of music, culture, and self-expression.
Gaga, known as ‘Mother Monster’, kicked off the two-hour show at 10:10 p.m. local time with a dramatic rendition of her 2011 hit “Bloody Mary”. She followed it by classics like “Poker Face”, “Alejandro”, and tracks from her latest album, Mayhem, including “Abracadabra”.
Rio’s city government funded the concert. The windfall gains came with $100 million into the local economy. Over 500,000 tourists flocked to the city, according to Rio City Hall.
Fans were euphoric, as @TinglyToes1 said in a post on X: “More than two million people attended a free Lady Gaga concert on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, city officials say. The pop star’s biggest ever concert was paid for by the city in an attempt to revitalise Rio’s economy.” Another user,
Lady Gaga fan @BaboonForestEnt also shared the sentiment, saying that “over two million fans attended a free Lady Gaga concert on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, her biggest show ever.”
CNN in a report said that a “sea of people filled Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach on Saturday as pop superstar Lady Gaga played a colossal free concert in the Brazilian city”. NPR quoted Gaga addressing the crowd: “Tonight, we’re making history. (…) Thank you for making history with me,” capturing the emotional weight of the moment as fans sang and danced shoulder-to-shoulder.
The concert was a love letter to Brazil and Gaga’s LGBTQ+ fans, with the singer waving a pride flag during her performance of “Born This Way”. Out.com noted, “The overwhelming energy of over 2 million people singing, jumping, and screaming the lyrics to Gaga’s entire concert setlist had the singer, her band, and her team of dancers getting emotional at various points of the performance.”
Security was tight, with 5,000 police officers, drones, and facial recognition cameras ensuring safety, while 16 sound towers carried Gaga’s voice across the beach. Sky News highlighted the economic impact, stating, “Some 500,000 tourists travelled to watch the concert, which was paid for by the city in an attempt to boost the struggling economy.”
Gaga’s emotional connection with her audience was palpable. Manoela Dobes, a 27-year-old designer, told NPR, “Today is the best day of my life. It’s surreal to be here,” wearing a dress adorned with a photo from meeting Gaga in 2019.
Fans spontaneously sang an encore of “Bad Romance”. Gaga joined them briefly. The concert was broadcast live on TV Globo, Multishow, and Globoplay.
