Khalistan Knot: Jenin Camp; Corporate Care

Khalistan Knot
The Indian Express has said in its Editorial that the resurgence of radical Sikh propaganda is a concern, and the planned ‘Freedom Rally’ on July 8 in Toronto is more worrisome for the fact that the radicals are issuing open threats to Indian diplomats, while Canada remains a mute spectator. The daily said that radical propaganda has become more visible after the “Referendum 2020” organized by the Khalistani supporters.
The Noida-based daily gave an account of the complicity of the vote bank politics in Canada to allow terror sanctuaries by citing that the nation could not punish any of the perpetrators of the Kanishka bombing of 1985 in which 329 Canadians were killed. The newspaper has cautioned the Canadian government to take the issue of the Sikh radicals on soil seriously, else the bilateral ties could be affected.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has been too mild in his condemnation of Canadian authorities watching an enactment of the assassination of late Indira Gandhi. This tolerance is giving legs to the radical Sikhs who have been acting at will in the UK, Australia and now even the US. India must send out a loud message that allowing such acts amount to unfriendly behavior and there will be an accompanying cost.
Jenin Camp
The Asian Age in its Editorial grimly noted the military action by Israel backed by air power, missiles and drone attacks, in Jenin Camp in West Bank in the Palestine controlled areas which left 10 people dead, including five teenagers. The daily lamented that the world is muted to the military actions of Israel in Palestine territory in a rerun of the actions last seen in the scale of operations in Gaza 20 years ago.
The New Delhi-based daily said that 140 Palestinians have lost their lives this year, while the toll on the side of Israel is 30. The newspaper opined that the Israeli action on Jenin Camp is only the tip of the iceberg, given that the rightist formations are in power in Tel Aviv.
Israel-Palestine conflict is an unresolved issue of the last century, and also a testimony that the multilateral agencies are ineffective in finding peace in conflict zones. With the world powers testing their weapons in Ukraine, Israel has a field day to launch its “anti-terror” actions, which could be a template for other countries as well.
Corporate Care
The corpus of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Fund stood at Rs 26,210 crores in FY 2021, said The Economic Times in its Editorial, while ruing inability of companies to weave CSR into their corporate strategies, lack of NGOs, and failure to take on board the local communities.
The business daily stated that the companies with profit of Rs 5 crore and more, net worth Rs 500 crores, or a turnover of Rs 1000 crores must spend average two per cent of the profits of last three years on CSR.
Corporates in India with a few exceptions are mostly miser, and the CSR fund of Rs 26,210 crores when India is over $3.75 trillion economy is too little.
