New Delhi, October 11: Karnataka has ordered all establishments in the state to hoist Kannada flag on November 1 at their premises. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday said that IT firms and other private establishment must hoist Kannada flag on November 1.

“I have issued an order as a Karnataka Minister that all establishments in the state must hoist Kannada flag on November 1. This is the day our state got an independence,” said Shivakumar.

Karnataka State Day is celebrated on November 1. In 1956, Kannada speaking districts were merged to create the state of Karnataka. A major agitation was carried out in the run up to the creation of the Kannada speaking state.

“All establishments, including private IT companies and others, have to mandatorily hoist the Kannada flag. I am appealing to all the IT companies and other institutions to hoist the Kannada flag in front of their premises,” added Shivakumar.

The deputy chief minister of Karnataka said that “November 1 is the day when Karnataka got independence”. “I am also warning the Kannada activists against creating nuisance,” said Shivakumar. He warned the Kannada activists against visiting the premises of the establishments.

The diktat of the Karnataka deputy chief minister has come amid the political parties in the state pandering to the Kannada activists. In past, the Kannada activists have held anti-Hindi agitation in Karnataka.

The Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka has been stoking the sub-nationalism in the state. A few months ago, the Congress government had approved a bill for quota for locals in private jobs.

The local quota bill approved by Karnataka mandated 50 per cent reservation for Kannadiga in managerial positions in private enterprises. The bill also mandated 75 per cent reservation in non-managerial positions in private firms.

But the backlash from the IT sector in particular elicited course correction from the Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka. The Karnataka Industries Minister MB Patil within a day of the approval of the local quota bill announced putting the measure on the hold.

The state government after approving the local quota bill has not yet stated whether the proposal has been withdrawn. Now, the state government by asking the private enterprises to hoist flag is aiming to appease to the Kannada activists.

The Karnataka State Day on November 1 is a holiday. The offices, enterprises, and other activities are closed for the day.
