Kargil Question

The Telegraph in its Editorial has claimed that the “evil genie of majoritarianism” is now out amid rising incidents of Muslims facing violence, while commenting on query of a youth in Kargil from former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on the sense of insecurity of the minority community. The daily quoted Gandhi having replied that the “Muslims along with other minorities are under assault”. The Kolkata-based daily cited several instances of the incidents of Muslims at the receiving ends to build a case of a containment strategy not only limited to the political front.

Indeed, the incidents of Muslims being singled out in some instances such as shooting in a train are sickening. But Gandhi should do some soul-searching, for the Congress is equally guilty of locking the Muslims in the country into ghettoes and blocking ways for their socio-economic advancements. That ills of history cannot justify the pain of the present is true. Yet, remedy needs honesty from all stake-holders.

Connecting Dots

Prime Minister Narendra Modi should have visited Greece far earlier, but he, underlined The Hindu in its Editorial, sought to “leap-frog (bilateral) ties”. The Chennai-based daily spotlighted that ties of Greece with Israel and Cyprus aim to contain Turkey, which has been inimical to the Indian strategic interests, and, thus, it should have been natural for New Delhi to stitch strategic relations with Athens. Also, the daily underlined, Greece, highly indebted to China, is looking for options, while India seeks out the gateway of Europe to build closer ties with European Union.

Modi’s foreign policy rightly deserves applause for connecting dots, and India should build close ties with maritime powers amid the growing realization that domination of the international waters would in future define the strength of power of the nations.

Yoking Machines

Several dailies have come out with Editorials on the paper brought out by TRAI on regulating artificial intelligence, while concurring on the urgency to safeguard various interests against the crawling threat of the machines. While The Economic Times has sought protection of intellectual property rights, including the original content creators from theft by AI, other dailies have sought robust mechanism to block potential threats to security and others areas.

Yoking AI to serve the interests of humanity is most urgent, and also to blunt the prospects of the tech-giants from crushing small content creators. TRAI’s suggestion of an international alliance is timely, but most urgent is national response from India because of the deepening strategic threats caused by China.
