Survey Reveals Sharp Gains in Rating for Trudeau’s Party

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, February 11: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has gained in popular endorsements. A survey revealed Trudeau’s Liberal Party of Canada gaining almost 10 points in recent days to close gap with the main Opposition.

Nanos Research released the survey outcome on Monday. It stated that Trudeau’s LPC had 30 per cent popular endorsement. The principal Opposition Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) still led the popular ratings with 38 per cent.

But Nano Research stated that the CPC which is led by the Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre lost nine percentage points in lead since January 9. Trudeau’s party began making gains after US President Donald Trump threatened to annex Canada.

Trump reiterated on several occasions that he is keen for Canada to become the 51st state of the US. Trudeau has strongly snapped back against Trump for his claims to take over Canada.

Trade War Begins: Trump’s Tariff Riles Canada, Mexico & China

“Trudeau’s party was down 27 points before Trump’s inauguration. The gap is now eight points in this survey,” said Alexander Panetta, a US-based political journalist in a post on X.

Trudeau is also gaining by stoking nationalist fervors in Canada. The Canadian Prime Minister announced counter tariffs against the US recently.

Trudeau announced phased imposition of tariffs against the American goods. The US had earlier announced a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian imports. But the tariffs were later paused for a month following phone talks by Trump and Trudeau.

Canada-based political commentators argued that CPC is losing gains due to its pro-annexation image. They argued that the Canadians reject the idea of merging with the US. Trudeau is gaining from anti-US sentiments of the people.

Trudeau had resigned from the post of the leader of his party recently. He quit amid sinking popular ratings. But a reversal in fortunes may weigh on him for a rethink on resignation, argued Canadian political analysts.

‘Oh Canada’: Donald Trump Puts Justin Trudeau on Notice

Philippe J. Fournier, Editor of 338Canada, said in a post on X that “the Conservatives are projected at an average of 205 seats — well above the majority threshold, but down 30 seats in two weeks.”

“As for the Liberals (Trudeau’s party), they climb to 84 seats, more than double the party’s projection on the eve of Trump’s inauguration,” he added.

Canada is bracing up for the national elections this year. Trudeau has been in power since 2015. He has been leading his party since 2013.
