Questions Mount in Justice Cash Scandal: Ex-IB Officer Slams Probe Delays and ‘Immunity’ Culture

By Amit Kumar

New Delhi, April 20, 2025: A firestorm has erupted over the handling of the alleged cash haul at the residence of a sitting judge, following a scathing post on social media platform X by former Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Yashovardhan Azad.

His detailed account and pointed questions have reignited concerns over transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in high places. Azad’s post refers to an incident that occurred on March 14. Half-burnt currency notes were discovered at the home of Justice Yashwant Varma in Delhi.

Despite the alarming nature of the discovery, Azad alleged that authorities — including the Delhi Police and fire brigade — merely documented the scene, took photographs and video footage, and left without making any seizure or initiating formal investigation steps.

“If you find ₹15 crore cash, what kind of immunity is this — not to register FIR in case of judges?” Azad wrote, calling it a “joke” that such a serious case could slip into bureaucratic limbo.

A Loop of Inaction

According to Azad, after the Delhi High Court was informed, the matter was escalated to the Chief Justice of India (CJI), leading to the formation of a preliminary enquiry committee. But nearly one and a half months later, no formal FIR has been registered, raising serious questions about legal protocol, institutional hesitation, and possible attempts to suppress evidence.

“Statements are going on, but police now say they can’t seize anything without a court’s permission, and without FIR, there can be no seizure,” he noted. “So evidence disappears.”

Even more alarming is his claim that electronic evidence was deleted on the grounds that it could fall into the wrong hands — despite photographs of the incident already being in the public domain.

Seven Unanswered Questions

In his post, Azad lays out seven sharp questions that strike at the heart of the legal and investigative process:

  1. Why does the judiciary seem immune from standard procedures when serious evidence is discovered?
  2. Would police walk away from a blood-soaked dagger just because an FIR hadn’t yet been filed?
  3. Wasn’t prima facie evidence of wrongdoing already established when crores of cash were found?
  4. Why couldn’t permission to lodge an FIR be granted immediately upon receiving such information?
  5. Why wasn’t the Income Tax Department involved, given the clear financial angle?
  6. Wouldn’t multiple investigative agencies have stormed a common citizen’s residence in such a case?
  7. Will anyone in authority raise these questions, or will the case be buried in silence?

Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court, found himself at the centre of controversy since the March 14 incident. The source and intent behind the presence of ₹15 crore in partially burned currency remains unclear.

With no official FIR or search and seizure operations, there are growing fears that the investigation may be compromised or quietly derailed.

Justice Varma has been transferred to Allahabad High Court. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar also lashed out at the judiciary for “stalling an FIR” in the cash find case.
