Lauds Hard Work of Class 10 & 12 Students; Calls Education the True Driver of Social Change

By AMIT KUMAR

RANCHI, July 12, 2025—In a heartening gesture of grassroots leadership, Jairam Mahto, the firebrand MLA from Jharkhand Loktantrik Kranti Morcha (JLKM), has donated 75% of his salary from the last three months to support meritorious students who excelled in their Class 10 and 12 board examinations.

The initiative, which covers hundreds of students across Mahto’s constituency in Bokaro district, is aimed at encouraging academic excellence and easing the financial burden of higher education on deserving families.

Speaking at a distribution ceremony attended by students, parents, and local leaders, Mahto said, “This is not charity. This is a commitment to the future of our society. These children have shown that even with limited resources, one can achieve great success through dedication and hard work.”

“Politics Must Serve the People”

Known for his unconventional and pro-people politics, Mahto said his move was in line with his belief that public representatives must use their privileges to uplift the communities they serve. He stressed that education remains the most powerful instrument for social transformation.

He added, “If even one child goes on to become a doctor, engineer, teacher, or civil servant because of this support, it will be worth every rupee.”

According to his office, students from government and government-aided schools who secured first division or above in Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) and CBSE/ICSE exams were identified for the financial award. The amount distributed ranged between ₹5,000 and ₹15,000 per student, depending on their scores and stream.

Parents and teachers present at the event lauded the gesture, calling it a rare example of a public servant giving back directly to the people, especially in rural areas where education support is often minimal.

Mahto, a first-time MLA and founder of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Kranti Morcha, has gained significant popularity for his vocal advocacy of tribal rights, local employment, and educational reform. His actions have resonated particularly among youth and first-generation learners in the region.

This initiative further cements his image as a people’s representative with a purpose, and political observers note that it could influence voter sentiments.

Mahto ended his address with a message to students: “Education is your real inheritance. Use it well. And when you grow up, remember to give back to society in whatever way you can.”
