Assembly Polls’ Verdict Throw Out Small Parties Out Of Electoral Rings

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, October 8: Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir rejected the smaller political parties in the respective verdicts for the Assembly elections. The National Conference (NC) along with the Congress swept through Jammu and Kashmir to win a simple majority in the Union Territory Assembly.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shined in Haryana at the cost of the smaller political parties. The BJP won a simple majority in the Haryana Assembly on Tuesday.

Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir at the commencement of the poll campaigns presented crowded electoral battle rings. But by the time the people queued up to cast their votes, they had eliminated the smaller outfits from their choices.

Awami Ittehad Party of the Lok Sabha MP Engineer Rashid drew a blank in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. He had fielded a large number of candidates in the Kashmir valley.

Rashid was tipped to play the spoiler for the NC in South Kashmir. His rivals looked at him with awe at his scale of electioneering.

Rashid had also forged an alliance with the Jammat in the Kashmir valley. The final poll outcome showed that Rashid and Jamaat candidates had been routed in the poll ring in the Kashmir valley.

Seven independent candidates won in Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party of Mehbooba Mufti could win just three Assembly seats.

The Congress failed to grab the attention of the electorate in Jammu and Kashmir. The Congress could win just six Assembly seats in J&K.

The NC won a total of 42 Assembly seats to power the Indian National Developmental and Inclusive Alliance to power in Srinagar. The BJP got the consolation of winning the largest number of Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir.

Bagging 25 per cent vote share, the BJP won 29 Assembly seats to emerge the strong Opposition outfit in J&K. The J&K mandate also blanked out any post-poll permutation and combination.

“In J&K, we have seen an affirmation of the NC-Congress alliance,” said Shashi Tharoor, the Lok Sabha MP and the Congress leader. The Congress communication in-charge, Jairam Ramesh, asserted that the new government will work for the restoration of the full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.

The pattern was repeated in Haryana. The smaller outfits in the electoral rings were routed. The Indian National Lok Dal, the Jananayak Janata Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party, and independents faced routs in Haryana.

The marginalisation of the smaller outfits in Haryana saw the Congress and the BJP polling 39.08 and 39.89 per cent vote share. The difference of 0.80 per cent in the vote share handed over the BJP an additional 11 Assembly seats.
