J&K Legislative Assembly Holds Special Session on Pahalgam Tourists’ Killings

Srinagar, April 28, 2025 — Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday strongly condemned the brutal killing of 26 tourists, including a local ponywalla, by terrorists at Baisaran in Pahalgam on April 22.

The J&K Legislative Assembly convened today for a Special Session, during which the House unanimously passed a resolution condemning the Pahalgam killings and reaffirming “unwavering commitment to peace and harmony”.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s office said in a post on X: “The Assembly observed a two-minute silence at the start of the session, honouring the innocent lives lost in the Pahalgam terror attack. A solemn reminder of our collective grief and unwavering resolve against violence.”

In a special daylong session convened to address the tragedy, Rather and members of the Assembly expressed deep anguish and shock over the attack, which claimed the lives of innocent visitors who had come to enjoy Kashmir’s natural beauty.

Leading the obituary references, Rather paid glowing tributes to the victims from the floor of the House. The Assembly paid homage to killed tourists solemnly remembering each by name, including Vinay Narwal, N. Ramachandran, Dinesh Agarwal, Atul Shrikant Moni, Neeraj Udwani, Samer Guha, and others.

Expressing profound grief, Rather called for unity across the nation against terrorism. “Let us send a strong message to the world that the entire nation condemns this barbaric act,” he said.

He described the attack as “an assault on humanity and peace,” emphasizing that the killings were not just crimes against individuals, but an attempt to disturb the region’s harmony. Rather urged all sections of society to come together to reject violence and uphold the enduring values of peace, brotherhood, and unity.

The Speaker extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, expressing solidarity with their unimaginable pain.
“The purpose of convening this special session is to deliver a clear message: the whole country stands united in the fight against terrorism,” Rather said.

He also mourned that the dreams of the tourists to experience Kashmir’s natural beauty were “brutally shattered” by a senseless act of violence. Calling for immediate measures, Rather urged the government to ensure the safety and security of citizens, students, and business owners from Jammu and Kashmir residing or studying elsewhere in the country.

He concluded by appealing to all members to work together to create a secure environment for all citizens and visitors and to honour the victims by reaffirming a collective commitment to peace, tolerance, and compassion.
