JMM celebrates bail to Hemant Soren ahead of Assembly poll

Ranchi, June 28: The Jharkhand High Court on Friday granted bail to former state chief minister Hemant Soren. The HC Justice Rangan Mukhopadhyay on Friday pronounced the verdict in the bail plea of Soren.

The former chief minister is currently lodged in the Ranchi jail in an alleged land scam case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested Soren ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The ED had arrested Soren on January 31 this year. High voltage drama had taken place preceding the arrest of Soren.

Soren had resigned from the post of the chief minister around the time he was arrested in Ranchi. He was out on a short-term bail recently.

The High Court granted bail to Soren on two sureties of Rs 50,000 each. Soren had moved to even the Supreme Court with his bail plea.

Soren is embroiled in an alleged land scam case involving 8.5 acres of land in Bargain in the state. The ED had arrested Soren also in the money laundering case.

Soren had moved to the PMLA court for bail. He also went to the High Court and Supreme Court.

While his bail pleas were rejected at most places, the Jharkhand High Court had reserved the decision on June 13. Soren was represented by senior lawyer Kapil Sibal.

The ED lawyer SV Raju had urged the court not to grant bail to Soren. After hearing the arguments of both the parties, Justice Mukhopadhyay had reserved the verdict.

Justice Mukhopadhyay pronounced a one-line verdict in the courtroom. He pronounced that “Hemant Soren is granted bail”.

The ED plea for a 24-hour stay on the bail was also rejected. There was jubilation in the ranks of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha on Soren getting bail from the High Court.

The JMM leaders expressed joy at Soren getting bail after five months. They hoped that Soren would soon be released from the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar, Ranchi.

The ranks of the JMM were exultant also for Soren getting bail ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Jharkhand. The JMMP is the lead partner of the Opposition block, the Indian National Developmental and Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), in the state.
