Jharkhand BJP Awaits Leadership Attention After Assembly Poll Loss

Ranchi, February 24: The Budget session of the Jharkhand Assembly began on Monday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is yet to elect leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly.

“We are hopeful that the Central BJP leadership will find time to decide on the issue of the leader of the Opposition. Currently, the situation in Jharkhand is embarrassing for the party that there is no leader of the Opposition,” said a senior state unit BJP leader.

Ahead of the Assembly session, the BJP state president Babulal Marandi presided over a meeting of the Jharkhand legislator from the party. The state party core committee leaders also took part in the strategy meeting.

Marandi was the leader of the Opposition in the previous Assembly. But the BJP has not yet held the legislature party meeting in Jharkhand to elect its leader.

“There is a leadership void in Jharkhand. No one really knows what the central leadership of the BJP is thinking. The BJP should have sorted out the issue of the leader of the Opposition before the commencement of the Budget session of Assembly,” said another senior BJP functionary in Ranchi.

Marandi appears to have lost favour with the central leadership. Under his leadership, the BJP faced one of the worst defeats in the Assembly elections in Jharkhand. The BJP could win just 21 Assembly seats.

The BJP also had kept the Karnataka state legislators on tenterhook by not giving nod to the legislature meeting even after several months of the Assembly elections in the state. “The Karnataka model is seen repeating in Jharkhand. This is not the first time that the BJP MLAs have gone into a state Assembly session without a leader in the House. The example of Karnataka is before us,” added the BJP functionary.

The Jharkhand Budget will be presented on March 3. The Soren government is likely to make financial allocations in the Budget for poll promises in the Assembly elections.
