NEW DELHI, July 23, 2025 – In a recent episode of MSNBC’s “The Best People” podcast, hosted by Nicolle Wallace, actor Jeff Daniels didn’t hold back his frustration with US President Donald Trump and his supporters.
Daniels, known for his roles in ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and ‘The Newsroom’, expressed hope that Trump voters would face economic consequences due to policies like tariffs, which he believes will raise costs for everyday Americans. In a pointed seven-word message to Trump supporters, Daniels stated, “I hope you’re losing tons of money.” He elaborated, saying, “Which I think, at the end of the day, that’s what’s going to do it. ‘Wait a minute, the grocery bill is what? $180 more? I can’t get that car that we have to have unless I pay another $8,000. What? Who do I blame for that? Who do I see about that?’ One person.”
Daniels also criticized the Republican Party’s trajectory, accusing it of deteriorating under Trump’s influence and comparing the former vice president, Kamala Harris, to Abraham Lincoln for her potential to lead with a “team of rivals.” The interview, which aired on July 21, 2025, also touched on Daniels’ career and his upcoming role as Ronald Reagan in the film ‘Reykjavík.’
The comments have sparked backlash, with White House Spokesman Kush Desai responding, “Wow, another washed up, out-of-touch left-wing Hollywood clown is wishing harm on everyday Americans because they disagree with his opinions. Unfortunately for Jeff and fortunately for the American people, under President Trump bond and stock markets are rallying, Joe Biden’s inflation crisis is over, and real wages are rising.”
Variety in a report on podcast said that Daniels had endorsed Kamala Harris in last year’s election. He was quoted by the magazine, saying: “America has lost decency under Trump.”
“We’ve lost decency, we’ve lost civility, we’ve lost respect for the rule of law — lost it,” variety quoted Daniels’ remarks in the podcast. He also said that “we have normalized verbal abuse on the internet. We’ve normalized bullying; much as the woke generation tried to, you know, change that, it’s back… I mean, nobody has great things to say about politicians.”
He further lamented: “Go back to Mark Twain. But ideally, we’re supposed to elect the best of us. Not the worst of us. He’s everything that’s wrong with not just America but with being a human being.”
