NEW DELHI, May 8, 2025 –External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Thursday outlined India’s Pakistan Doctrine in a meeting with visiting Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araghchi in New Delhi.
Jaishankar’s Pakistan doctrine seems outlined in India’s unequivocal resolve to defeat terror designs of Pakistan, while assuring major retaliation if Islamabad provokes militarily.
Jaishankar shared a short video clip of his remarks made during the delegation level talks with his Iranian counterpart. Incidentally, Iran had offered to broker peace between India and Pakistan.
Remarks of Jaishankar assertively made clear India’s Pakistan Doctrine for the international community that no third country has any scope to play a role. Jaishankar essentially sought to convey to the international audience to look India with a new prism with no past bias.
The message appears clear that India will be unhindered and unimpeded in response against terror infrastructure in Pakistan. By spelling out the hard stand to the visiting Iranian FM, India has also conveyed to the Islamic world that there will be no compromise and leniency in fight against cross-border terrorism.
The discussions, held as part of the India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting, addressed the fallout from India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK), launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
Jaishankar reiterated India’s stance that issues with Pakistan, including the Kashmir dispute, must be resolved bilaterally under the Simla Agreement. “We look for partners, not preachers,” he said, responding to Iran’s offer to mediate between the nuclear-armed neighbors, according to sources cited by ETV Bharat.
He emphasized India’s “zero tolerance” for terrorism, defending the precision strikes as a necessary response to Pakistan-based terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, which India blames for the Pahalgam attack.
Araghchi, who visited Islamabad on May 5 and urged both nations to exercise restraint, described India and Pakistan as “brotherly neighbors” of Iran and reiterated Tehran’s mediation offer.
He had said before embarking for the Pakistan visit that “Tehran stands ready to use its good offices to forge greater understanding between India and Pakistan”.
The meeting also covered bilateral ties, including cooperation on the Chabahar Port, and regional issues like Afghanistan. Araghchi sought de-escalation in his talks with Jaishankar. But India told him that Indian action is not escalatory.
