Former Himachal CM says Sukhvinder Sukhu’s government has failed disaster victims and mismanaged finances

SHIMLA, August 1, 2025 — In a scathing attack on the Himachal Pradesh government, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur said the High Court’s recent remark on imposing economic emergency in the state has exposed the complete failure of the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led administration, calling the court’s comment a “mirror to the government’s misrule.”
Speaking to the media in Shimla, the former Chief Minister accused the Congress government of pushing the state into financial turmoil through mismanagement and cronyism. “This is perhaps the first time in the history of Himachal that the Hon’ble High Court had to make such a harsh comment asking why an economic emergency should not be imposed. The government’s corrupt and chaotic working style has brought shame upon the state,” he said.
Thakur alleged that the Sukhu government’s focus has been on “benefiting friends and select individuals,” rather than serving the people of the state. “Wherever there is an opportunity to benefit friends, this so-called ‘Vyavastha Parivartan (System Change)’ government finds a way. But when it comes to public welfare, it looks the other way,” he added.
Thakur also highlighted the ongoing protests and unrest among contractors across Himachal Pradesh, claiming that their payments are being delayed deliberately and are influenced by political interference. “We have repeatedly raised this issue — that contractors are not being paid. There are widespread allegations of a ‘fee-for-payment’ system being run, where those close to the ruling elite benefit. Protests, strikes, even a suicide attempt by a contractor in front of a minister — all were ignored,” Thakur said.
He accused the government of misleading the public and the courts, adding, “They were forced to face the law with facts and documents. But in court, the lies of the government cannot survive, and so the truth has finally come out.”
Thakur also criticized the government for failing to deliver disaster relief to those affected by the devastating 2023 floods, despite receiving significant assistance from the Centre. He stated, “The central government sanctioned ₹5,150 crore in relief after the 2023 disaster and also allocated 93,000 houses under the PM Awas Yojana. Yet, the affected people are still awaiting help and promises to remain unfulfilled.”
He accused the Sukhu government of failing to transfer even the central relief funds to the victims on time, saying that the inefficiency is inexcusable. “This is the tragedy of a government that talks big about change but hasn’t delivered even on the most critical responsibilities,” Thakur added.
Thakur also recalled how earlier, the High Court had to order the auction of Himachal Bhawan in Delhi due to the government’s failure to meet commitments, calling it another black mark on the administration.
