Israel-Hamas War: World on edge as fury rages over hospital attack
By Manish Anand
New Delhi, October 18: Israel has gone overboard to counter accusations that it bombed the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza that killed allegedly about 500 people, including scores of children. Jordan has said that the war may not be averted. Saudi Arabia Foreign Affairs Ministry in its statement has named Israel while accusing Tel Aviv for bombing the hospital.
Israeli embassies in the Arabian world have become the principal target of the protestors who are vowing revenge on Israel. The United Nations also has come out with condemnation of the incident, while underlining that no international law allows killing of the civilians.
Chief spokesperson of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) Daniel Hagari said: “We have recorded conversations from Gaza that prove Islamic Jihad’s responsibility for the blast at the hospital in Gaza.” The Hamas also issued a statement saying that the “Islamic Jihad denies responsibility in strike on Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital”, while accusing Israel for bombing the hospital.
With Israel in the dock over the killings of the civilians in Gaza, Tel Aviv is seen to be running out of friends in the international community while protests also build on against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu within the country for his handling of the security situations. Russia has also sought from Israel that it should release the satellite images to prove that it didn’t bomb the hospital in Gaza. Israel has also claimed that over 450 rockets fired by the Hamas fell within the territory of Gaza since October 10.
“No crater or obvious shrapnel pattern consistent with standard IAF JDAM/Mk80 series bombs visible in this image. Still not conclusive, but IF this is the extent of the damage then I’d say an airstrike looks less likely than a rocket failure causing an explosion and fuel fire,” claimed Justin Bronk, Professor at the Royal Norwegian Air Force Academy.
US President Joe Biden is arriving in Tel Aviv while trip to Jordan was cancelled. Jordan has said that it cancelled summit with Biden. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has already visited Israel and reiterated Germany’s support to Tel Aviv in its fight against the Hamas.
With Israel now in dock for disproportionate response to the Hamas attacks against civilians in Gaza and also for blocking the humanitarian aid from Egypt, Biden appears to have tough task on hand to maneuver the Middle East out of a war like situation.
