Speaking to Al Arabiya English, Negar Mortazavi says US military involvement will not free Iran—but could ignite a regional firestorm

By TRH World Desk

New Delhi, January 4, 2026 — Calls for regime change in Iran are growing louder. Protests are visible on Iran’s streets, gaining more strength with each passing day.

Some slogans target Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But turning unrest into revolution is not that simple, argue Iranian observers.

Negar Mortazavi, host of The Iran Podcast, offers a stark warning. Speaking to Al Arabiya English, she says outside military action will not solve Iran’s internal crisis.

She calls recent talk of regime change “misguided.” Her reason is clear. Internal dissent is not the same as foreign intervention.

Mortazavi points to hard lessons from the region. Iraq. Afghanistan. Libya.

“Bombs from the sky did not bring democracy. US boots on the ground did not build nations. Promises of liberation collapsed into chaos in nations where the US intervened for regime changes,” argues the podcaster.

Iran, she says, will be no different. “The Iranian people can decide their own fate,” Mortazavi explains.

But history shows foreign wars make that harder, not easier. She also warns of a wider disaster.

“Iran is not isolated. It is one of the largest and most populous countries in the Middle East. Any war will not stay contained. It will spread fast,” she explains.

The Iranian observer also stresses that “Iraq is already entangled. The Gulf will be drawn in. The entire region will feel the shock.”

This, the analyst argues, will not remain an Iran–Israel–US conflict. “It will multiply instability. It will deepen violence. It will create consequences far beyond Tehran,” asserts the US-based podcaster.

Mortazavi’s conclusion is blunt. “Adding a military attack to Iran’s chaos will not help its people. It will only make everything worse,” she believes.
