Iran Expands Retaliatory Strikes Across Gulf as US Says All Attacks on American Forces Failed
New Delhi, June 3, 2026 — The confrontation between Iran and the United States entered a dangerous new phase on Tuesday as Tehran launched missile and drone attacks targeting American military facilities in the Gulf, while Washington responded with strikes on Iranian positions near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for missile attacks against US military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain, describing the operation as retaliation for American strikes on Qeshm Island and other Iranian targets. Iranian state media reported that Camp Arifjan and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait were among the intended targets, while Iranian officials also claimed attacks on US military assets linked to Bahrain.
The US military, however, disputed Iranian claims of success. US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that all Iranian attacks targeting American forces failed, with missiles either intercepted, falling short of their targets, or breaking apart during flight. According to US officials, two missiles fired toward Kuwait failed to reach their intended destination, while additional missiles targeting Bahrain were intercepted by US and Bahraini air defences.
The exchange followed American “self-defense strikes” on Iran’s Qeshm Island. CENTCOM said US forces engaged Iranian drones and missiles that posed threats to American personnel and maritime traffic in the Gulf. US military officials also confirmed actions against Iranian military infrastructure on the island after Tehran launched attacks across the region.
The latest escalation suggests that both sides are abandoning earlier efforts to keep military responses limited. Analysts note that the conflict increasingly resembles a cycle of reciprocal escalation, with each side seeking to demonstrate deterrence while avoiding a full-scale regional war.
Iranian officials have adopted increasingly aggressive rhetoric. The IRGC warned that the era of “strike and run” attacks was over and vowed that future American actions would be met with what it described as a “decisive and crushing response.” Iranian-linked sources also claimed Tehran would respond more forcefully to future US operations.
The crisis is also raising concerns about energy security. Continued military activity around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, has pushed crude prices higher and disrupted commercial shipping. The United States has maintained a maritime blockade around Iranian ports since April, further intensifying tensions.
Despite the exchange of fire, both Washington and Tehran appear mindful of the risks of a broader conflict. Yet with missile launches, drone attacks, maritime confrontations and collapsing diplomatic efforts occurring simultaneously, the Middle East now faces its most volatile security environment in months.
