IPS officer gets jail term for defamation against MS Dhoni

The Madras High Court bench of Justices SS Sunder and Sunder Mohan delivered the verdict on the defamation case filed by Dhoni.

New Delhi, December 15: India’s World Cup winning cricket team captain MS Dhoni won a case filed against IPS officer Sampath Kumar for contempt of court. The Madras High Court on Friday held the IPS officer guilty for defamation against Dhoni.

Bar and Bench reported that the Madras High Court awarded 15 days of imprisonment to the IPS officer in the defamation case filed against him by Dhoni. The news portal also reported that Dhoni had filed the defamation case against the IPS officer for linking him in a betting claim made to the media.

Bar and Bench has also reported that the Madras High Court has suspended the jail term of the IPS officer for 30 days to allow him to appeal against the conviction in the higher judiciary. The Madras High Court bench of Justices SS Sunder and Sunder Mohan delivered the verdict on the defamation case filed by Dhoni. Bar and Bench reported that Dhoni had filed the defamation case against the IPS officer as well as Zee Media for a report which claimed that he was involved in betting in IPL matches.

The Bar and Bench reported that IPS officer Sampath Kumar had probed the alleged IPL betting scam. Dhoni had also moved the High Court to restrain the media from publishing defamatory news against him. Bar and Bench reported that Dhoni had filed defamation case against the IPS officer after he allegedly made further claims on the cricketer linking him to the betting scam.

Dhoni has retired from international cricket. But he still plays for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Dhini had led India win the ICC World Cip in 2011. Dhoni had also led India win the T20 ICC World CUP.

Betting in cricket matches is widely alleged, while the police in different states have caught several people involved in running betting scam. Recently, betting also became an election issue after Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel of being involved in a betting scam. The Enforcement Directorate is currently probing the Mahadev betting scam. Modi had accused Baghel of being involved in the betting scam after an accused became an approver and he allegedly named Baghel.
