New Delhi, October 21, 2025 —This year’s Diwali, according to BJP MP and traders’ leader Praveen Khandelwal, has not just brightened homes but illuminated India’s economic landscape. Citing a nationwide survey by the CAIT Research & Trade Development Society, Khandelwal announced that India recorded an all-time high ₹5.40 lakh crore in goods and ₹65,000 crore in services traded during the 2025 Diwali season — the highest festive turnover in Indian retail history.

The survey spanned 60 major markets and thousands of traders across Tier 1, 2, and 3 cities, reflecting what Khandelwal described as “a new milestone under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” According to him, the Prime Minister’s ‘Vocal for Local’, Swadeshi push, and rational GST reforms have translated into “tangible economic growth and renewed market confidence.”

Compared to the previous year’s ₹4.25 lakh crore festive trade, this year’s 25% rise in turnover mirrors improved purchasing power, consumer optimism, and stronger domestic demand. Categories such as garments, footwear, confectionery, and home décor saw sharp growth following GST rate cuts.

The CAIT survey also reveals a significant shift in consumer preference: 87% of shoppers opted for Indian-made goods, while sales of Chinese imports declined steeply. Domestic manufacturers reported an average 25% year-on-year rise in sales, underlining that the Swadeshi sentiment has evolved from emotion to economic force.

The report further estimates that this festive boom generated nearly 50 lakh temporary jobs across logistics, packaging, hospitality, and delivery sectors, providing a robust boost to MSMEs. Notably, rural and semi-urban India contributed 28% of total sales — evidence that consumption growth is increasingly inclusive and broad-based.

India’s Trader Confidence Index has climbed to 8.6 (from 7.8), and the Consumer Confidence Index to 8.4, underscoring widespread optimism in the retail sector. “This surge is not just statistical — it’s the story of millions of small traders whose resilience defines India’s economy,” Khandelwal said.

In essence, the Diwali 2025 trade boom is a symbolic and substantive reflection of Aatmanirbhar Bharat — where tradition meets transformation, and the spirit of Swadeshi powers a new chapter of prosperity.
