Claims of aerial offensive spark outrage from insurgent outfit; Assam CM awaits official word from defence forces

By TRH State Desk

Guwahati, July 13, 2025 — The banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (Ulfa-I), led by fugitive leader Paresh Baruah, on Sunday accused the Indian Army of launching a missile strike on its camp in Myanmar, killing two of its top commanders and injuring several others. The Indian Army, however, has denied having any information on such an operation.

In a statement issued to a local publication, Ulfa-I alleged that the strike occurred during the funeral of one of its senior-most leaders, self-styled Lt Gen Nayan Asom, who the group claims was killed in an earlier drone attack earlier on Sunday. The outfit identified the deceased in the missile strike as top leaders Ganesh Asom and Pradip Asom, calling the attack “inhuman” and a “cruel violation” of international norms.

“The Indian occupational forces have continued their aerial assault using fighter aircraft in our area. We warn that this colonial aggression will be avenged,” the outfit stated, while also alleging that civilians were among the injured.

Local media reports quoted Defence spokesperson based in Guwahati, Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, responded to the claims by saying, “The Indian Army has no input on any such operation.” The army has neither confirmed nor denied the reported incident officially.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, when asked about the Ulfa-I’s statement, said he was aware of the claims but had no confirmation of any military action. “There has been no operation launched from Assam soil, and the Assam Police is not involved. The Ministry of Defence usually issues a formal statement after such activities, but none has come so far. We expect more clarity by this evening,” he told reporters.

Ulfa-I, which refers to Indian security forces as “occupational forces” and labels India a “colonial nation,” has long operated from Myanmar territory, where several northeastern insurgent outfits have maintained bases. The group has alleged that Indian fighter aircraft continued to target specific areas within its operational territory after the initial strike.

The militant outfit has vowed retaliation and has called upon “the people of Assam to remain alert” to what it describes as “escalating military aggression by the Indian state.” As of now, no independent verification of the incident or the alleged casualties has been made available.
