New Delhi, October 12: India has called for a two-state solution to Israel-Palestine conflict. India reiterated its stand for the resumption of direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine.

The Ministry of External Affairs in an official briefing has underlined that India calls Hamas attacks on Israel as a terrorist attack. “Our policy in this regard has been long standing and consistent. India has always advocated the resumption of direct negotiations towards establishing a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine living within secure and recognized borders, side by side at peace with Israel,” Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for the MEA, told reporters on Thursday.

The remark has come at a time when the BJP leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, launched sharp attacks on the Congress for its working committee resolution which supported the right for self-government of the Palestinians, as well as the rights of the people there to live with dignity. Incidentally, Sarma had accused the Congress of speaking the language of Pakistan for its stand on the issue of Palestine.

It may be noted that barring the western block most of the countries, including Russia, Arab World, and other Asian nations, have reiterated their longstanding positions for the two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

“We have been very clear that we see it as a terrorist attack,” Bagchi said, adding that “as far as Palestine is concerned, India has advocated the resumption of direct negotiations towards establishing the sovereign, independent and viable state of Palestine living within secure and recognized border side by side with Israel”.

It may be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet had extended solidarity to Israel “against the terror attack”. Hamas control the Gaza strip, and it launched a multi-faceted attack on Israel with the help of paragliders by jamming the intelligence infrastructure, besides raining thousands of rockets to give cover to the intruders.
