NEW DELHI, May 10, 2025 – Tensions between India and Pakistan surged as Pakistan launched missile strikes targeting Indian cities, prompting India to retaliate with attacks on three Pakistani airbases.
Pakistan’s military announced “Operation Bunyan Un Marsoos,” deploying Fatah-series ballistic missiles against Indian Air Force bases and urban centers. One missile was reportedly intercepted near Sirsa, Haryana. Pakistan’s army spokesman, Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, claimed India fired missiles at three airbases, including one near Rawalpindi, with most intercepted. Unverified social media videos show explosions at multiple locations in Pakistan.
India’s counterstrikes reportedly targeted key Pakistani airbases. AFP quoted Chaudhry confirming the Indian attacks. Pakistan-based journalist Ammara Ahmad reported on X that Hajira in Pakistan-administered Kashmir was “completely destroyed” by shelling.
Geopolitical analyst Michael Kugelman warned on X, “India and Pakistan are effectively at war, the first time since the 1999 Kargil conflict.” He described this as a critical test of nuclear deterrence, noting international mediation is likely intensifying. Pakistan issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), closing its airspace to all traffic.
Bruno Maçães, another analyst, cautioned on X that an attack on Pakistan’s Nur Khan airbase near Islamabad could push a nuclear power toward escalation, though he noted Pakistan’s unique nuclear posture.
Pakistan also claimed cyberattacks on India’s power grid, with no reported disruptions. Additionally, Pakistan launched drone attacks targeting 26 Indian cities, including an armed drone strike in Ferozpur that injured a civilian family. The injured received medical aid, and the area was secured.
The Indian Armed Forces remain on high alert, tracking and neutralizing aerial threats with counter-drone systems. The situation is under constant monitoring, with prompt action as needed.
India after conducting Operation Sindoor had warned earlier that Pakistani escalation to target civilian and military bases would invite attacks on Pakistani armed forces bases. Reports said that India has escalated counter response after Pakistan launched the missile attacks.
Pakistan launched the missile attacks after two days of drone attacks. Indian Army’s Col Sofia Qureshi in an official briefing had said that the drone attacks by Pakistan were “aimed at gathering intelligence”.
Heavy shelling is underway at the Line of Control (LoC). A few of residential targets near the LoC have also been hit by the Pakistani shelling.
Pakistani journalists claimed that dog fight is also underway with scores of fighter jets in operation. But India has not officially commented on fighter jets currently undertaking counter operations against Pakistan.
But visuals aired by television showed that heavy artillery guns are now in action in shelling at the LoC. Reports claimed that several of Pakistani military bases have been destroyed in India’s counter shelling per reports.
