Trump Announces India-Pakistan Truce Amid Escalating Tensions

By TRH News Desk

NEW DELHI, May 10, 2025 – India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire”. Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan this afternoon reached out to his Indian counterparts for de-escalation.

The announcement, first made by US President Donald Trump, was confirmed by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri made a brief statement before the media to confirm the ceasefire pact.

The ceasefire came in effect from 5 PM, May 10. Trump posted on Truth Social on May 10: “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.” He further stated “congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the sentiment on X, stating: “Over the past 48 hours,

Vice President JD Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif… I am pleased to announce the governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.”

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the truce on X: “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”

Earlier, Dar told Geo News, as posted by @ShaykhSulaiman on X: “If India stops, we will consider stopping also, ball in India’s court,” indicating Pakistan’s conditional willingness to de-escalate after conveying this to Rubio.

The ceasefire follows a week of heightened hostilities, triggered by India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7, which targeted terror camps in Pakistan and PoK in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.

Pakistan responded with “Operation Bunyan Marsoos,” launching missile and drone strikes on Indian military sites. At least 13 civilians were killed in Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir, and a senior J&K official, Raj Kumar Thappa, died in Rajouri due to Pakistani shelling.

Geopolitical analyst Michael Kugelman commented on X: “Trump and Rubio’s mediation seems to have worked, for now. Both India and Pakistan get to claim victory—Modi with Operation Sindoor’s success, Sharif with a ‘befitting response.’ The real test is whether talks at a neutral site can address Kashmir and terrorism.”

The breakthrough came after Rubio’s extensive diplomacy, engaging Modi, Sharif, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.

India maintained that its actions were “focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” while accusing Pakistan of targeting civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools in Srinagar and Udhampur. Pakistan denied civilian targeting, claiming its strikes hit only military installations.

The G7 and China urged restraint, with Beijing expressing “deep concern” and offering to play a “constructive role.”
