India-Pakistan Tension: J&K Mourns Loss of Civilians Amid Escalating Violence

NEW DELHI, May 10, 2025 – The volatile India-Pakistan border saw heightened conflict as Pakistan intensified attacks on Jammu and Kashmir, prompting strong retaliation from Indian forces. The violence claimed the life of a senior J&K official and drew sharp condemnation from regional leaders.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the death of Additional District Development Commissioner Raj Kumar Thappa, killed when Pakistani shelling struck his residence in Rajouri. “Just yesterday, he accompanied the Deputy CM and attended my meeting. Today, his home was hit,” Abdullah said, calling the loss “devastating.”
He urged residents in Jammu to stay indoors, avoid spreading rumours, and remain united during the crisis.
Abdullah also criticized the international response, stating on X: “I’m not sure how the ‘International Community’ thinks tensions will de-escalate when the IMF essentially reimburses Pakistan for ordnance devastating Poonch, Rajouri, Uri, Tangdhar, and other areas.”
The IMP bailout package involving an instant payment of $1 billion is inviting a massive furore in India with an all-round condemnation of the multilateral agency.
The Border Security Force (BSF) reported that Pakistan initiated unprovoked firing on BSF posts in the Jammu sector starting at 9:00 PM on May 9, 2025. “BSF is responding commensurately, causing widespread damage to Pakistan Rangers’ posts and assets along the International Boundary,” the BSF stated, reaffirming its commitment to India’s sovereignty.
The Indian Army reported thwarting a Pakistani drone incursion over Khasa Cantt, Amritsar, at 5:00 AM on May 10. “Multiple enemy armed drones were spotted and instantly destroyed by our air defence units,” the Army posted on X, condemning Pakistan’s “blatant attempt to violate India’s sovereignty and endanger civilians.” The Army vowed to counter further provocations.
The escalating clashes, marked by shelling and drone strikes, have heightened fears of broader conflict. Abdullah’s appeal for calm and unity underscores the region’s precarious situation as Indian forces maintain high alert along the border.
Pakistan also aimed at striking Delhi with missile attack. The Fateh missile was neutralized at Sirsa in Haryana. Some of the drone debris after they were neutralized fell on farm fields in parts of Punjab.
The Indian Army per reports also destroyed the launch pad of drone attacks in Pakistan. The Indian air defence system has effectively blunted the drone attacks of Pakistan which targeted the full western sector, from Leh in Ladakh to Kuchh in Gujarat.
