India Moonwalks

Deccan Herald in its Editorial has hailed India’s landing of Chandrayaan-3 on Moon, saying “it will serve as a station for space exploration and journeys to other regions in the solar system and beyond”, while stressing on importance in economic, strategic, and technological areas of the feat. “India marked its arrival much more emphatically than in the past in the global space race arena, as well as signalled that it is there for the long term,” added the Bengaluru-based daily.

Success of Chandrayaan-3 will give a major boost to India’s strategic strides as ISRO with Japan will set up a lunar base in the polar region in 2025. Besides, the achievement may also encourage the next generation of scientists in the country who would attempt much bigger feats.
Fatal Fake

The Asian Age in its Editorial dwelt upon the extent of fake news in the backdrop of the claims that the former Zimbabwean cricket legend Heath Streak had passed away going viral and spread by mainstream media houses also. “I am very upset to learn that something as big as someone apparently passing can be spread unverified especially in our day and age,” the New Delhi-based daily quoted the cricketer telling its reporter. The daily lamented the speed with which “we react to news without even an iota of doubt”.
There had been several such instances in the past, including of former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, and the mainstream media houses have also been caught for exercising due diligence in passing news to the people.

Safe Lane

The Tribune in its Editorial has hailed ‘Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP)’, the safety rating system for passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes, to come in force from October 1. “Priced at one-fourth (around Rs 60 lakh) the cost of the rating systems available at present in just four other countries, the NCAP should spur more carmakers to get crash tests and evaluation of other safety parameters done for their vehicles,” opined the Chandigarh-based daily, while quoting the latest WHO data of road accidents being the leading cause of death among youth and children.

At a time when cars are being sold as hot cakes, safety aspects must be accorded the high priority by the customers, while auto-makers should be transparent to share the test results upfront.
