Lt Gen R. Singh reveals Beijing provided real-time intel, Ankara supplied drones during May 2025 conflict

NEW DELHI, July 4, 2025 — In a significant disclosure, Lieutenant General Rahul R Singh, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Capability Development & Sustenance), revealed that China and Turkey directly supported Pakistan during the four-day Operation Sindoor in May 2025. Speaking at the New Age Military Technologies summit organized by FICCI, Lt Gen Singh said India was effectively confronting “one border, three adversaries.”

“Eighty-one percent of Pakistan’s military hardware is Chinese, and China uses Pakistan as a live lab to test its weaponry,” Singh said. He added that during DGMO-level talks, the Chinese provided real-time intelligence to Pakistan, even alerting it to planned Indian vector strikes. “In one instance, the Pakistani DGMO specifically requested the withdrawal of a vector that was about to be launched,” he disclosed.

The senior officer also accused Turkey of providing Bayraktar drones and trained personnel to Pakistan during the conflict. “Ankara’s tactical support complemented China’s strategic backing,” he said, calling the coordination a “China-Pak-Turkey axis.”

The conflict erupted following India’s targeted operations against terror groups in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). While the confrontations were intense, Lt Gen Singh said civilian areas were not threatened during the operation.

He stressed the urgent need to upgrade India’s air defence and surveillance systems, particularly to counter growing threats from drones and advanced missile technologies. “India must invest in C4ISR systems and counter-drone technologies to stay ahead of this evolving threat landscape,” he said, citing Israel’s air defence as an example of preparedness — though he acknowledged the high costs involved.

While media reports suggest steps have been taken to economically penalize Turkey, India has not yet responded to China’s involvement in the conflict. Union Minister for Defence Rajnath Singh recently took part in a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). He had expressed his displeasure at a joint statement not condemning the Pahalgam terror attack. The key mandate of the SCO is known to be collaborations among member nations against terrorism.

Singh made no mention of any role played by the United States, despite the fact that Pakistan continues to operate US-supplied fighter jets and weapon systems. Notably, the Pakistani Air Force Chief is currently in the US to coordinate joint military practices.

The disclosures mark a rare, candid acknowledgment from the Indian military of the multi-front strategic threat posed by India’s adversaries, underlining the need for a recalibrated approach to future conflicts.
