India Makes Quick Moves Against Pakistan Post-Pahalgam Attack

By TRH News Desk

New Delhi, April 24, 2025: In a significant development, Union Ministers Amit Shah and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar called on President Droupadi Murmu. They went to Rashtrapati Bhawan within hours of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a speech stating that “significant and stringent” punishment will be served to perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack.

Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday briefed diplomats of G20 nations. The embassy officials of China and Canada also took part in the briefing by the MEA on the Pahalgam terror attack.

President is the supreme commander of India’s Armed Forces. Shah and Jaishankar are members of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), which met for two-and-a-half hours last evening. The CCS decided to put the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 in abeyance. The CCS also concluded that there were cross-border linkages to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Significantly, Pakistan has also called a rare national security meeting in Islamabad. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir are attending the meeting.

Pakistan is peeved at the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty which had survived several conflicts between the two nations. The Pakistani media warned in their comments that the suspension of the water sharing treaty could leave devastating trails for agriculture in the Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan.

In his first public statement after the Pahalgam terror attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the “punishment will be significant and stringent”. Modi said that India will pursue the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to the “end of the earth”.

“Today, on the soil of Bihar, I say to the whole world, India will identify, trace and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth,” Modi said, while addressing a public meeting in Madhubani in Bihar.

The Prime Minister presided over a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) yesterday to decide on a five-pronged response against Pakistan. The decision to put the 1960 Indus Water Treaty in abeyance was the spotlight of the CCS meeting.

“India’s spirit will never be broken by terrorism. Terrorism will not go unpunished,” added Modi. He also added that “every effort will be made to make sure that justice is done”.

“The entire nation is one in this resolve. Everyone who believes in humanity is with us,” added Modi.

The Prime Minister also thanked “the people of various countries and their leaders who have stood with us…The punishment will be significant and stringent, which these terrorists would have never even thought about…”
