NEW DELHI, June 13, 2025 – India and China agreed to intensify efforts to stabilize and rebuild their bilateral ties during a fresh round of diplomatic talks held yesterday in New Delhi. The dialogue took place between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, who is on a two-day visit to India.
Sun Weidong also met India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval during his stay. Both sides reviewed developments in the relationship since their last meeting in Beijing earlier this year on January 27, and discussed a wide range of bilateral, regional, and international issues.
The talks were described as candid and in-depth, reflecting the continued efforts of both sides to address differences while building on areas of cooperation.
Foreign Secretary Misri emphasized the importance of people-centric engagements in stabilizing ties and appreciated China’s cooperation in resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra this year. Discussions also covered trans-border river cooperation, with India expressing hope for progress on resuming the provision of hydrological data and expanding other forms of cooperation.
Sun Weidong, for his part, noted that China-India relations have maintained a “hard-won momentum of improvement and development.” He urged both sides to follow the consensus reached by their leaders during the recent meeting in Kazan, adopt a long-term strategic perspective, enhance political mutual trust, properly manage differences, and contribute jointly to regional and global peace, stability, and prosperity.
Both sides agreed to expedite steps for resuming direct air services between the two countries and to work towards an updated Air Services Agreement. Practical measures for visa facilitation and greater exchanges between media, think tanks, and resident journalists were also discussed to promote people-to-people contacts.
The two sides positively assessed activities planned to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China and agreed to facilitate these celebrations. Additionally, functional dialogues, including on economic and trade issues, will be resumed to address specific areas of concern.
The Indian side reaffirmed its support for China’s presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Both sides also agreed to jointly prepare for the 24th Special Representatives’ Meeting on the boundary question, to be held at an appropriate time.
During the meeting, Sun Weidong conveyed his condolences to India over the air crash that occurred in Gujarat on June 12.
The meeting reflects cautious but continuing efforts by both countries to address longstanding tensions while seeking avenues for cooperation and normalization of ties.
