India & China Hold Border SR Level Talk Amid ‘Sincerity’ Buzz
Beijing Asserts China Willing to Address Border Issues with Sincerity

New Delhi, December 18: India and China on Tuesday held the 23rd round of the talks between the Special Representatives (SRs) in Beijing. China said after the delegation level talk that Beijing will work with sincerity to resolve the differences.
The SR level talk was held after a gap of five years. The 22nd round of the talk was held in New Delhi in 2019. A year later, People’s Liberation Army (PLA) trespassed in the Galwan valley to set off violent skirmishes with the Indian army.
The Galwan Valley is a narrow pass in the Karakoram range of the Himalayan mountains. The valley is seen as strategic.

The National Security Advisor Ajit Doval led the Indian delegation in talk with China. Wangi Yi, Foreign Affairs Minister of China, led the Chinese delegation. Both Doval and Wang are close confidantes of Indian and Chinese leaders Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping.
Lin Jian, the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reports after the SR level meeting that China is ready to work with India to resolve differences with sincerity. “China is ready to respect the concerns of India and address issues with sincerity and common understanding arrived at between the leaders of the two nations,” said Lin.

Diplomatic community in the two nations have commented that the meeting between Modi and Xi at Kazan on the sidelines of BRICS resulted in the “common understanding” to resolve the border tension. After the Kazan Summit, India and China began disengagement from the military standoff positions in eastern Ladakh.
“As agreed by China and India, China’s Special Representative on the China-India boundary question, Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi and India’s Special Representative and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval will hold the 23rd meeting of Special Representatives for China-India Boundary Question in Beijing,” said Xu Feihong, Chinese ambassador in New Delhi.

Wang had met Doval on the sidelines of BRICS event in St Petersburg this year. “The two sides discussed the progress made in recent border affairs consultations. China and India should uphold independence and autonomy and choose unity and cooperation; they should strive for mutual success and avoid exhausting each other,” Wang was quoted by Xu having told Doval in the meeting.
After the SR level meeting, Beijing said that “China is ready to work with India to implement the important common understandings”. It added that leadership of the two nations agreed to “respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, strengthen mutual trust through dialogue and communication, properly settle differences with sincerity and good faith”.
China had recently hosted a number of Indian media persons who were taken to several industrial units. China had also facilitated meetings of the Indian media persons with Chinese think tanks where “experts” argued for stable and normal bilateral ties between the two nations.
