India-US Relations Co-developing Many Technologies: Vaishnaw at WEF

New Delhi, January 24: Amid spectre of looming trade war after US President Donald Trump threatened tariffs against several countries, India has said that relations are built on long-term trust. Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw said at World Economic Forum (WEF) that India believes in ‘And’ rather than ‘Or’.

He was speaking in the context of trade competition with China. “Our PM Narendra Modi has given us a very clear thought that we should develop our relationships with the world based on trust. Trust comes with a lot of effort. It requires tremendous hard work, transparency, and a period of understanding each other,” said Vaishnaw in Davos.

On relations with the European Union, the minister said that “we believe that our relationship with the EU today is based on trust, that is what is going to help us more”. “We don’t think in binaries. We believe in ‘and’ rather than ‘or’. So, we believe that our design capabilities the high-quality talent pool, and the way our PM has given us a very steady policy regime will give us good results,” added Vaishnaw.

The minister said that India believes in a win-win for the EU and in every sector we collaborate He also exuded confidence continuity in relations with the US.

“Our relationship with the USA has evolved over the last 10 years in a very mature way. We are co-developing many technologies. We are co-creating many products,” added Vaishnaw.

He also stated that India and the US have taken up many joint research programs and we are part of the QUAD where we have common interests in the security of the world. “We have many common geostrategic interests and we believe that this transition which has happened in the US will be very important for the entire world,” added the minister.

China observers see India-China tension subsiding

He stated that “we believe that the relationship of trust between the US and India will help the growth of both the countries whether it is in the technology economy and many other sectors”.

“Investors are interested in multiple sectors e.g. in technology – semiconductors, AI, Electronics manufacturing, research, design, GCCs. We can club all these under the technology umbrella,” added Vaishnaw. Apart from that, many other sectors like skilling, aviation, food processing, tourism, ocean (fishing), and energy are also very important for investors, said the minister.
