NEW DELHI, May 2, 2025 — The speaker of India’s lower house of Parliament, Om Birla, called for a unified global response to combat terrorism during a meeting with a Japanese parliamentary delegation on Friday, emphasizing the need for democratic nations to uphold peace and the rule of law. The talks, held at the Parliament House complex, followed a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which has heightened regional security concerns.

Nukaga Fukushiro, speaker of Japan’s House of Representatives and leader of the delegation, condemned the Pahalgam attack and reaffirmed Japan’s support for India’s counterterrorism efforts. Birla thanked Japan for its solidarity, describing the India-Japan partnership as vital for global peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The meeting underscored the deepening ties between the two nations, rooted in shared democratic values and a Buddhist heritage. Birla highlighted their collaboration in multilateral forums like the Quad, G20, and International Solar Alliance, noting that both countries share concerns on regional and global issues. “Our friendship has evolved into strategic and global cooperation,” he said.

Cultural exchanges also featured prominently. Birla welcomed the growing number of Japanese tourists and pilgrims visiting Buddhist sites in India, which fosters people-to-people connections. He praised Japan’s proposal to employ 50,000 skilled Indian workers in various sectors and expand opportunities for Indian students. Japan’s commitment to support infrastructure development in India’s northeast was also acknowledged.

Reflecting on India’s democratic journey, Birla noted the country’s 75th anniversary of its Constitution, which has driven socio-economic progress. He cited laws like the 2016 Disability Rights Act, the 2019 Transgender Persons Act, and the 2023 Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which reserves seats for women in legislatures, as steps toward inclusive governance. He also highlighted the Indian Parliament’s use of digital technology and artificial intelligence to enhance transparency and efficiency, offering to share these innovations with Japan.

The meeting was attended by Harivansh, deputy chairman of India’s upper house; Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Jha; and Lok Sabha members Bhartruhari Mahtab, Deepender Singh Hooda, and Kamaljeet Sehrawat.

The discussions reflect a broader alignment between India and Japan, two key players in the Indo-Pacific, as they navigate shared challenges like terrorism and regional stability while strengthening economic and cultural bonds.
