New Delhi, April 28, 2025: The Brazilian political drama I’m Still Here, directed by Walter Salles, hogged the limelight at the 12th edition of the Platino Awards. Ibero-America’s premier celebration of film and television held centre stage at the Municipal Palace in Madrid, spotlighting the region’s cinematic excellence.

I’m Still Here swept top honours, winning Best Film, Best Director, and Best Female Performance for Fernanda Torres, who was absent from the ceremony.

The event, hosted by the Spanish Radio Television Orchestra, also recognized Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude adaptation and honoured Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria with the Platino Honorary Award.

According to Deadline, I’m Still Here emerged as the night’s biggest winner, with its Oscar-winning narrative about Brazil’s military dictatorship resonating strongly. The film’s success followed its triumphs at February’s Goya Awards, reinforcing its critical acclaim.

Deadline reported, “The 12th edition of the Madrid-hosted Platino Awards, honouring the highest in Ibero-American film and television, saw major wins for the Oscar-winning Brazilian film I’m Still Here.”

Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude also secured multiple awards, including Best Ibero-American Fiction Miniseries or Teleseries, highlighting the streaming giant’s growing influence in the region.

Variety echoed this, noting, “Walter Salles’ political drama I’m Still Here swept top honours at the 12th edition of the Premios Platino, Ibero-America’s most prominent awards event.”

The outlet highlighted the film’s cultural and political significance, adding that next year’s ceremony will be held in Xcaret, Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Other winners included El 47, La Infiltrada, and Segundo Premio, which also earned accolades at the Goya Awards. A standout moment was the surprise appearance of Colombian actress Sofía Vergara, who presented Eva Longoria with the Platino Honorary Award.

Variety reported Vergara’s humorous remark: “I came to Hollywood wanting to be Eva Longoria, and she’s younger than me,” which had Longoria in stitches.

Longoria’s award recognized her audiovisual career and advocacy for Latino representation, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter: “The Platino Honour recognises the actress’s outstanding audiovisual career and her representation of the Latino community in the American industry.”

Mexican director Tatiana Huezo made history as the first Mexican to win Best Documentary for The Echo, dedicating her award to Mexico’s peasant children.

Variety quoted her saying, “This prize is for the peasant children of The Echo and of Mexico.”

Spanish media outlet @rtvenoticias reported in Spanish, “Aún estoy aquí triunfa en los Premios Platino: mejor película, director y actriz,” reflecting local pride in the event’s global reach. However, @divinity_es, via critic @NachoMontesTV, offered a mixed perspective, posting,  “Aciertos y errores de los Premios Platino 2025,” suggesting some organizational or selection critiques.

The Platino Awards, established to strengthen Ibero-American audiovisual industries, including Spanish-speaking countries and Brazil, have grown into a vital platform for cultural exchange.

@Milenio in a post on X quoted organizer Susana Moscatel, who said, “Queremos hacer una industria audiovisual fuerte de todos los países hispanoparlantes y Brasil,” underscoring the awards’ mission to unite the region’s film industries.

With 23 categories and 864 entries judged by industry professionals, the awards rival the prominence of Spain’s Goya Awards and Mexico’s Ariel Awards. The event’s move to Mexico in 2026 signals continued expansion, with organizers aiming to deepen ties across the Americas.
