New Delhi, November 3, 2025 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday termed the death of late cultural icon Zubeen Garg as a “murder.” His remarks came amid raging anger among the fans of the deceased singer, who had died in Singapore while swimming.
The Chief Minister asserted that his government’s immediate priority is to ensure justice in the case. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Sarma said, “Today, I will not address Zubeen Garg’s death as a mere incident or accident but as a murder case.”
According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, the Chief Minister confirmed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case is ready to file its chargesheet before December 17, with a target date of December 8. He explained that since the case has links abroad, approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is required before submission.
“Yesterday, I met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and requested early clearance. I believe that the SIT will soon write to the MHA, and once we get approval, we will immediately file the chargesheet — most likely by December 8,” he said.
Sarma also announced that the state government has allotted 10 bighas of land for Zubeen Garg’s Samadhi, mirroring the gesture made for Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s memorial. “We wanted to maintain parity between both their resting places by offering similar land size,” he said, while dismissing questions about other land ownership in the area.
Addressing a public event under the Mukhya Mantrir Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA) in Sonitpur district, the Chief Minister reiterated that justice for Zubeen Garg remains the government’s foremost focus.
“Our first priority is Zubeen Garg. If we jump to these things before filing the chargesheet, people will not be happy,” he said, responding to opposition charges that his government was “concealing facts” and “misleading the public.”
Sarma also stated that details of the alleged links mentioned by the opposition would be revealed only after the SIT files its report. “Even if we disclose the findings in January, it won’t change anything. I’m not going to work as per our enemy’s timeline,” he stated.
