NEW DELHI, May 24, 2025 – The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday reviewed the national COVID-19 situation amid reports of a limited rise in cases from a few states, assuring the public that the situation remains under control and most cases are mild.
In a high-level meeting chaired by Union Health Secretary, key officials from the Department of Health Research (DHR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) assessed the emerging trends and surveillance data.
States such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have reported a small uptick in COVID-19 cases. However, the Health Ministry emphasized that most of the infections are mild in nature and are being managed through home care without the need for hospitalization.
The Ministry noted that “India’s surveillance system remains robust”, with comprehensive monitoring in place through the “Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP)” and ICMR’s “pan-India respiratory virus sentinel surveillance network”.
Addressing concerns over international developments, the Ministry responded to media reports highlighting an increase in COVID-19 cases in “Singapore, Hong Kong, and other countries”. Citing updates from the respective “National International Health Regulations (IHR) focal points”, the Ministry confirmed that “no current evidence suggests the circulating variants are more transmissible or severe” than previous strains.
“The Union Health Ministry remains vigilant and, through its multiple agencies, is proactively monitoring the situation closely,” the official statement said.
The Ministry urged citizens not to panic but to continue following COVID-appropriate behavior where necessary and assured that all measures are in place to respond swiftly if the situation evolves.
In response to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, the Directorate General of Health Services under the Delhi Government had yesterday issued a comprehensive advisory to all government hospitals, urging immediate preparedness and preventive action.
The advisory, issued on Friday, and signed by the Special Secretary (Health & Family Welfare), outlines a series of measures to be strictly implemented by Medical Directors, Superintendents, and hospital administrators across Delhi.
The move has come amid a sharp uptick in COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asian nations. Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, and others have reported a sharp jump in number of patients affected by COVID-19.
Key Directives included directions for Hospital Preparedness; Staff Refreshers & Isolation; Disease Reporting; and Data Monitoring.
