New Delhi, October 9, 2025In a dramatic diplomatic breakthrough, Hamas has agreed to the US-brokered Gaza peace deal, with the signing expected to take place later today in Cairo, according to reports by Al-Mayadeen and Al-Arabiya. The development marks what could become the most significant ceasefire in the region since the start of the Gaza war nearly two years ago.

Al-Mayadeen quoted senior Hamas sources as confirming that “Hamas has agreed to Trump’s Gaza deal, and the signing will take place today, Thursday, in Egypt.” Egyptian sources separately told Al-Arabiya that Hamas has “agreed to the ceasefire draft,” adding that “the signing will take place in the coming hours.”

The deal is being framed as part of the ‘Trump Gaza Peace Plan’, an accelerated diplomatic effort spearheaded by US President Donald Trump and his foreign policy team. According to sources in Cairo, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is expected to host the signing ceremony, attended by American envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who arrived in Egypt earlier this week.

A Note, a Post, and a Presidential Push

The breakthrough comes just a day after Trump told reporters at the White House that the US was “very close” to a deal in the Middle East. During that appearance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio handed him a handwritten note — now revealed to have read: “We need you to approve a post on Truth Social soon, so you can announce the deal first.”

The message underscores the highly choreographed nature of Trump’s diplomatic style — merging real-time social media spectacle with old-fashioned dealmaking. Trump had said he might travel to Egypt this weekend, noting, “They’re going to need me pretty quickly.”

Background: The Trump Gaza Peace Plan

The Trump Gaza Peace Plan, first revived in mid-2024 and reshaped through months of backchannel negotiations in Cairo and Doha, aims to secure a permanent ceasefire, humanitarian corridor, and a reconstruction framework for the Gaza Strip.

While the proposal builds on earlier ceasefire drafts mediated by Egypt and Qatar, Trump’s version introduces US-monitored demilitarization guarantees and a regional security oversight mechanism that includes Egyptian and Jordanian participation.

American officials close to the talks say the US played a decisive role in bridging final disagreements over the timeline for humanitarian aid delivery and border monitoring.

Despite the optimism, diplomatic observers caution that implementation will hinge on Israel’s political response. Former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas told Al Jazeera that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “has no genuine interest in advancing the so-called Trump peace plan,” suggesting internal politics could complicate follow-through.

If signed, today’s agreement could mark Trump’s first major foreign policy achievement of his second term, potentially reshaping the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East. Egyptian President El-Sisi, meanwhile, hailed the progress as “a moment of hope for the region.”

As Cairo prepares the stage for the signing, the world waits to see whether the Trump-led diplomacy — and its mix of spectacle and statecraft — can finally deliver peace to Gaza.
