Guardrails of Democracy in Perils Against Oligarchs: Biden
Biden in Farewell Message Calls upon US to Stand Guard

New Delhi, January 16: The US President, Joe Biden, warned against dangers to guardrails of democracy. In a farewell message, Biden listed risks to democracy in the US by singling out the rise of oligarchs and techno complexes.
The US President drew a grim picture by stating that an “oligarchy of the ultra-wealthy is taking root in the country”. He also warned of a “tech-industrial complex”, infringing on Americans’ rights and the future of democracy.
“After 50 years at the center of all of this, I know that believing in the idea of America means respecting the institutions that govern a free society. The presidency, the Congress, the courts, a free and independent press,” said Biden in his farewell speech.
Trump Takes Credits for Gaza Deal while Biden Talks Diplomacy
The outgoing US President underlined that the “system of separation of powers and checks and balances may not be perfect, but it has maintained our democracy for nearly 250 years”. Margret Brennon, the CBS talk show host, said that the “President Biden’s farewell address wasn’t the fond farewell we were perhaps prepared for, as it included a number of warnings of the guardrails of democracy that he says are in peril”. She spotlighted Biden’s phrase of ‘Stand guard’.
But Biden’s farewell speech came within hours of Israel and the Hamas agreeing to a ceasefire deal in Gaza. The US State Department acknowledged the role played by Steve Witkoff in persuading Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to the ceasefire deal. Witkoff is US President-elect Donald’s Middle East top official.
The Israeli media is lambasting Netanyahu for agreeing to the deal, which is almost the same as one that was brought before in the month of May last year. The Israeli media is sharing photographs of the Hamas armed personnel taking part in the joyous celebrations in Gaza over the ceasefire deal.
While the Gaza deal is seen in Tel Aviv as thrust by a chaotic US administration, Biden was applauded by his former boss, ex-President Barack Obama. “Four years ago, in the middle of a pandemic, we needed a leader with the character to put politics aside and do what was right. That’s what Joe Biden did. At a time when our economy was reeling, he drove what would become the world’s strongest recovery – with 17 million new jobs, historic wage gains, and lower health care costs,” said Obama in a post on the social media platform X.
He also stated that Biden “passed landmark legislation to rebuild our nation’s infrastructure and address the threat of climate change”.
