Gruesome Jiribam Killings in Manipur Stir Demand for Peace
Congress Demands All-Party Meeting Ahead of Parliament Session

New Delhi, November 18: The gruesome killings in Jiribam in Manipur have renewed the calls for urgent intervention of the government to enforce order in the strife-torn Northeastern state. The Congress has called for an-all party meeting to discuss the prevailing situations in Manipur.
Even while the Centre stepped up deployment of security personnel in Manipur, peace remains elusive in the state. The civil society in Manipur is also up in arms against targeted killings of members of particular community.
The Congress has demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh for failing to stop the violence. Manipur erupted in ethnic violence last year in the month of May in the wake of a court order on reservation favouring a particular community.
The Congress on Monday demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and also call an all-party meeting before the winter session of Parliament starting on November 25. At the same time, the social media is also abuzz with polarizing comments and videos.
“One of the biggest problems coming from social media chatter regarding Manipur is that we have to take sides or we are biased towards one group or the other. Gruesome brutality cannot have sides; murders and rapes of children, women old men; whether it is Kuki/Zo, Hmar or Meitei cannot be justified by who started violence first,” said Pradyot Manikya of Tripura in a post on X.
He said that “as an individual/leader I want humanity to prevail”. “To see so called educated people justify and rationalise such brutality is a lesson for all those who considered that we live in a civilised world. Finally, I pray for peace in Manipur for all regardless of any ethnic group – this is not how I want to see my region and our country,” added Manikya.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that “the Prime Minister has handed over Manipur to the Home Minister and the only agenda of the Home Minister is to save Chief Minister N Biren Singh”. “The Home Minister has failed to provide security to the innocent people, children and women of Manipur. Taking responsibility for the Manipur violence, the Home Minister should resign from his post,” demanded Ramesh.
The Congress leader said that “Manipur has been burning since May last year. The Prime Minister has visited many countries, but he does not have time to go to Manipur.”
“The Congress party demands that the Prime Minister should visit Manipur before the Parliament session begins, meet the people living in relief camps and representatives of political parties there and take initiative to normalize the situation,” added Ramesh.
The Congress leader also stressed that “Manipur does not have a full-time Governor since July 31, 2024. The government should explain the reasons for removing Anusuiya Uike, who belongs to the tribal society, from the post of Governor after 18 months”.
