New Delhi, April 8: In a significant move towards bolstering India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SWAN Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd. today at GRSE Bhavan, Kolkata.
“This strategic collaboration marks a pivotal step in supporting the national vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in the maritime sector,” said GRSE in a media statement. The MoU outlines a non-exclusive partnership between the two shipyards for the construction of commercial vessels and offshore structures, targeting both global customers and national maritime requirements.
“The alliance is set to unlock synergies between GRSE and SWAN Defence by combining infrastructure, design expertise, and operational strengths to jointly scout for commercial shipbuilding projects and develop market-ready platform designs,” added the media statement.
India is positioning as a major destination for shipbuilding industry. India and the US also signed a pact last year to boost the shipbuilding and repair works.
“This partnership underscores our commitment to creating a self-reliant India in shipbuilding,” said senior officials from GRSE.
They stated that “by joining forces, we aim to accelerate project execution, optimize costs, and strengthen India’s position in the global maritime industry”.
The collaboration also emphasizes the creation of a skilled local workforce, with plans to invest in training and development initiatives. The MoU further includes cooperation in the trials, commissioning, and future repair of vessels, laying the foundation for a comprehensive and sustainable commercial shipbuilding model in India.
