New Delhi, October 20: India’s largest greenfield airport coming up at Greater Noida — Noida International Airport (NAIL) at Jewar — will soon have its air traffic control (ATC) tower and is expected to be ready by March 2024, while the runway is expected by 2024 end. The new ATC tower when it commences functioning would mean that the new airport can technically start flights in another short span of time, as over 70 per cent of the work of the runway is already completed.

The construction work of the ATC tower was recently reviewed by the government and the airport developer. The ATC tower, features eight floors, of which six floors are already completed and the last two floors are currently under construction. The tower, standing at a height of 30 meters. At least 7,200 workers are working to ensure the project’s timely completion.

The runway construction, according to the NIAL, is almost 70 per cent complete which includes the airstrip work targeted for completion by February-March 2024. The onsite review included Noida International Airport Limited conducted by the government and Noida International Airport CEO Christoph Schnellmann, COO Kiran Jain, District Magistrate Manish Verma, and Yamuna Authority’s officer-on-special duty Shailendra Bhatia did a review recently to ensure that the work is expedited.

The new airport at Greater NOIDA will not only offer fliers in Delhi NCR with additional airport but also extensive infrastructure development around the area and connectivity to various major places across Delhi NCR. In the review, the authorities covered the construction of an interchange being developed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) at Dayanatpur to connect the airport located in the Jewar area of Gautam Buddh Nagar district. NHAI officials assured that the road connecting the airport to the Delhi Mumbai Expressway will be completed on schedule. Directives were issued to expedite construction work and ensure adherence to the stipulated project timelines as per the concession agreement.

The Noida Airport is all set to become India’s largest after completion and is slated to open for commercial operations by the end of 2024 after the initial development phase in a vast 1,300-hectare area. The airport project is being executed by the Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a fully-owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG in partnership with the Uttar Pradesh government, and Tata Projects is the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partner for the project.
